Early morning flights are my least favorite thing in the world, but the destination is worth it. Having experienced Hawaii's beautiful colors before, I set out on a mission to capture those colors in the truest form possible. From the golden grass to the salmon skies, getting these true colors challenged me to tone down my editing, and really dial in my technical skills.
The first pictures I took were of the windmills along the Lahaina Pali Trail, where I was challenged with getting the true colors of the grass while being in direct and harsh sunlight. The most difficult time for me came at the summit of Mount Haleakala, which just so happens to be my favorite place in the world. I was high above the clouds at sunset, so balancing the beautiful brown and orange foreground of the volcano along with the white misty clouds and the vibrant pink and blue colors of the sky became quite the challenge for me. I definitely took more bad photos than I did good ones.
When it came to editing I imported all of my photos into Lightroom and focused on the exposure and highlight sliders. From there I would balance out the white and blacks and I had my photos! Below are my a few of my favorites in large format, but you can see the rest of Hawaii's vibrant nature along with many more beautiful photos on my portfolio page.
